Before I say anything, I have to congratulate and thank all the first responders who so magnficently and thanklessly went about their jobs during the Boston Marathon Bombing and its aftermath. The Governor, the Mayor, the Massachusetts State Police, the Boston Police, the Watertown Police, the MBTA Police, and all the EMTs, firefighters, and hospital medical staffs, and the countless others who spent their time keeping us all safe and informed all deserve our admiration and our prayers of thanks. Finding and eliminating the direct threat to our city in such a short time was simply miraculous. The remaining captured scumbag needs to be dealt with quickly, severely, and publicly. No punishment is too harsh for this guy.
With all that said, I wanted to ask you all. Did all the inaccurate reporting during this epic saga drive you as nuts as it did me? I would hear a story, get excited, angry or both, only to find out shortly after that it wasn't true. Isn't this unacceptable? I majored in broadcast journalism, and it was creed that you verified a story before running with it. Now the news outlets just want to be first... which is driven by the thirst for advertising dollars. It may be good business, but it doesn't make it right. This happens more and more in this age of tweeting and blogging, so the line between fact and fiction keeps getting blurrier. I heard one Boston radio personality say that despite occasional inaccurate reports, CNN was going a great job! How do you feel about it? Do you want the truth or do you want to hear the news first and figure out if its true later? Email me at michael@kcvisualsunlimited.com and let me know.
We need more Heroes like these guys!
On the to the next topic. LinkedIn Discussion forums. They are great for sharing information and commenting, but only if you get your comments published! I can't tell you how many times I've posted event notices, comments, and discussions, but they never get posted. You could argue some may or may not be spam, but its no different than dozens upon dozens of other posts that are clearly spam or sales pitches. However, I have one pending submission on a discussion that asks youto describe your business in one work. I said "Diverse", yet it waits hopelessly. What do you have to do to get your comments posted? I would love to know.
NBA officiating... what's up with that? Basketball has to be the hardest game to officiate, because the refereeing in the NBA is atrocious. The only question is, is it on purpose or is it just so hard it can't be officiated competently and consistently. Don't get me wrong, I still love watching NBA hoops. The talent is so far superior to college ball, its not even an argument. It just drives me crazy to see guys get away with travel, palming, back court violations, bogus fouls called and obvious fouls not called. The list could go on and on. All I ask is they make guys play by the rules, and call fouls fairly and consistently. Is that too much to ask Commissioner Stern?
And my final peeve for today, networkers that don't really want to network. I can't tell you how many people give me their business card, with telephone and email information on it, yet complain when I contact them. "Why are you calling me?", "How do I know you?", "Take me of your email list", and the negativity goes on and on. My question is, why are you attending networking events and handing out cards if you don't want to be contacted? Some would argue you need to build up relationships first before calling people. My answer to that is, how do you build relationships if you don't make contact? The obvious answer is that everyone is a seller not a buyer, which is fine, but be courteous about rejecting your fellow networkers. Take the call, listen and then politely decline if you are not interested. Thank them for calling! If you get an unsolicited email, delete it. How hard is that? If you truly need to be taken off the emailer's list, thank them for thinking of you and politely request you be removed from the list. It's really not a big deal! Does anybody play nice anymore?
